Drilling Fluids

Written by

When utilizing Horizontal Directional Drilling to pull in conduit, pipe, electrical, power, telco, data and other products, the initial pilot bore hole is drilled using a custom mixed Drilling Fluid (often referred to as Drilling Mud) to line the bore hole.   Drilling Fluid acts to stabilize, lubricate and prevent a bore collapse while allowing the drill cuttings (spoils) to flow back through the bore to the surface before the final product is pulled through. Often the pilot bore must be re-drilled and back-reamed multiple times with reamer bits that are incrementally larger than the original bit size to expand the bore size.  For example this is the method by which an eight-inch diameter pipe is pulled in with a four-inch diameter bore drill bit.

GMT utilizes the following Drilling Fluid Products to custom stabilize each bore once the soil type and distance are known. For detailed information on the following Drilling Fluids as well as many others please visit the CETCO website. Detailed information as well as MSDS Sheets are available there as well.

DitchWitch Drilling Fluid Formulator

GMT uses specially designed Horizontal Directional Drills (HDD) along with highly accurate drill bit locator systems to bore under obstructions such as parking lots, streets, buildings or streams without the need to excavate or trench up the entire distance. Often referred to as Trenchless Technology, HDD has much less impact to landscaping, yards, slabs, buildings, streets and rail lines.

Since the drill head can be steered underground, it is possible to make gradual changes in direction and depth to go around, over, or under pre-identified underground hazards such as existing Water, Sewer and Gas lines as well as Electrical, Telephone, Cable TV and/or Fiber-Optic lines.  A variety of products can be pulled back through the pilot bore hole once the pilot bore drilling is completed. These products include HDPE seamless conduit, Schedule 40/80 PVC joint conduit as well as rigid conduit, water line, Cable TV, Copper T-1 and Fiber-Optic lines.

At GMT we support:

  • Oil & Gas Well Monitoring, Control, Distribution-Controls, Power or Communications

Excavator Trenching

Uses specially designed chain excavators and track-driven backhoes to dig a trench from 6-12 inches wide down to a maximum depth of 60 inches. Typical reasons for excavation by chain trencher include: installing long runs of seamless pipe or conduit for data lines, telephone lines water, sewer, gas or fiber-optic lines through existing right of Ways or Utility Easements

A variety of products can be installed once the trench is completed. These products include HDPE Conduit, schedule 40 & 80 PVC conduit as well as seamless conduit, rigid conduit, water pipes, electrical conduit, telephone, T-1 and fiber-Optic lines. Once the products have been installed, the trench is filled back in along with special underground warning tape to warn future excavators of the buried lines.

Road and or Stream Crossing

GMT utilizes HDD Drilling machines that can be steered underground and therefore can drill under a stream, creek, or road without any major excavation or diversion requirement.

Fiber-Optic Cable Installation and CableJetting

Sonet-ring fiber-optic cable installation is accomplished via high-pressure conditioned air driving a CableJet fiber blowing system. The cable is blown through the HDPE conduit with virtually no stress on the fiber-cable other than a low strain pushing force and high speed air from the compressor. By utilizing this method of fiber blowing or jetting there is little chance of any detrimental strain being imparted on the fiber optic cable. At GMT this is our preferred method over traditional cable pulling methods still in use.

At GMT we install the HDPE conduit as well as other types of conduit and blow in the Fiber to manholes , hand holes, vaults or buildings. Frequently it is possible to blow in fiber to a multi-story building from the street level upward.  Link to Sherman-Reilley CableJet   http://sherman-reilly.com/product/view/cablejet/

Conduit and HDPE Installation

Many products can be pulled back through the pilot bore hole once the pilot bore drilling is completed. These products include High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE )Seamless conduit, Schedule 40/80 PVC Joint conduit as well as Rigid metal conduit, Water line, Cable TV, Copper T-1 and Fiber-Optic lines.

Manhole, HandHole and Vaults Installation

Due to long cable or conduit runs it is often necessary to install Polymer Concrete, Fiberglass or PVC Manholes, HandHoles or Vaults for intermediate pull stations or splicing points. GMT utilizes either a conventional Trackhoe or Hydro-Excavation to excavate to or clean out existing hand holes or Manholes. Pricing to install or clean out these points varies due to depth, size and distance.

Hydro-Excavation

Written by

Also referred to as Soft-Excavation, Potholing or Dry-Excavation, Hydro-Excavation is a new safer way of verifying located subsurface lines or hazards and verifying their depth, size, direction and construction materials before any HDD Boring, Trenching or Digging of new lines commences. A specially designed water-jet or air-jet breaks up the ground in a very small area and dirt, mud and debris is removed by a high-powered vacuum wand that can go down at least 6 feet below the surface.

The water or air-jet is used to break up the ground or debris but will not damage PVC Conduit, Ceramic Pipe, Metal Conduit or Pipe, nor will it cut Telephone, Power or Fiber-Optic lines. By using these safety methods, the operator can visually determine the exact location, direction, size, depth and type of previously installed and located underground utilities and thus avoid them with the Horizontal Drill, Trencher or Track Hoe.

Hydro-excavation can also be used to clean out driveway culverts, clean out underground water valve boxes, vaults, pull stations, handholds and or manholes that have been filled in with dirt and debris over the years. It can also be used to clean up spills, dry materials and to drill fence post or pipe holes.

Hydro-excavation is most often used to clean up drilling mud after directional drilling in urban settings. Typical Hydro-Vac tanks hold between 500 and 750 gallons.

  • Local or Long Distance Transport Conduits & Lines for Copper or Fiber-Optic Data, Telephone and Cable TV
  • Fiber-Optic Contractors
  • Cellular Tower Owners and Operators requiring additional backhaul or T-1 feeder lines

Special Note-

Larger projects may require an Independent third-party Professionally Engineered and Stamped PE Plans in addition to the State Required 811 Line Locate or equivalent. Additionally, when other site-specific Permits, Plans, Surveys or Authorizations may be required by Federal, State and Local law, these services are at an additional cost to the clients. This normally does not include the 811 Line Locate Service.

In cases where Hydro-Excavation or Hydro-Vac of Drilling Mud and Spoils are required, a pre-approved disposal site shall be provided by the client or when no such disposal site is available GMT will locate and transport materials to a disposal site for an extra fee. GMT will provide client and controlling entities with all Material Data Safety Sheets (MSDS) for any drilling fluids used during construction.
